The police are investigating the theft of gold items from a jewellery in Valletta this afternoon.

According to people on the scene, a man walked into Alfie Jewellery in Merchants' Street pretending to be a customer. When the sales girl unlocked a shop-window to show him some items, he grabbed as many items as he could and ran off.

The incident happened at about 1.45 pm.

The salesgirl ran after him, screaming, but he managed to escape running up the street and turning into St Paul's Street.

No one was injured. The police are studying CCTV camera footage as part of their investigations.
