Old telephone box vandalised
An old red telephone box at the top of Dingli Street in Sliema has been targeted by vandals.
The Sliema Heritage Society said the telephone box, which is at least 50 years old, had his timber door ripped off at the hinges and the closing mechanism was broken.
Phone boxes of this type are classed as Grade 2 national monuments.
The society condemned the vandalism and hoped the telephone box would be restored and the vandals apprehended.
Sliema council also condemned the incident. The vandalism took place in the early hours of Saturday.

Probably attacked after a night of binge drinking by a couple of drunken youths who don't care about anything except football, booze, girls and discos.

Idiots. No other word describes whoever does such a pointless act.
Interesting factoid, that box is in fact the second (actually third) one since the first one was crushed after a rather clueless driver managed to reverse over it... It was briefly replaced with a modern metal one until they brought another one from somewhere on the island (must have been in storage)

The Sliema Residents Association condemns this sort of behaviour on our streets which is becoming more frequent. We had the mugging of the elderly lady and theft from another, the theft of items from a car with a child witnessing everything from inside, vandalism galore etc...I think its about time to install more cameras on our roads for the safety of residents together with more enforcement and foot patrols by police and possibly the resurection of the neighbourhood watch. As a prominent Sliema reident told me this week, Sliema has lost most of its sense of community and so we are not caring for one another and do not give a damn to what happens in Sliema. There is no pride in our own home town. This is leading to degradation of the remaining community life in Sliema plus the 'ruination. of this once glorious town.

Shame on us. What’s the use of trying to improve the tourism sector when we still have these kinds of ignorant people around us? Vandals? They should be punished and not just be free on pledge.

Too many people with a lot of time on their hands and not a grain of salt in their brains. As for hoping that the vandals get apprehended, that is very unlikely. Vandals hardly get apprehended, which is a great pity.

i think the best thing is to surround these telephone boxes by barbed wire. At least nobody would vandalise them. They are there solely for decoration and to bring back memories when Malta was once part of the British Empire.
After all nobody ever uses these phone boxes, as C. Borg said, not even the '' illegal immigrants'' use these phone boxes with their fake phone cards to telephone home. Internet phoning costs peanuts and you can phone for hours.

From what I’m reading I can see that there’s a lot of people out there who do not appreciate what this country has to offer. I’m sorry to say, but I can only blame the authorities for lack of educating our kids. IT’S A SHAME.

You always blame "the authorithies" for all that's wrong in society. An easy way to shed responsibilities.

Are you real? There are things you learn at home. The Government does not form children parents do!!
I am not surprised with your comment... Earlier this week people blamed the government because it rained and the roads were wet! How can they allow such incidents!

blame yourself and not the authorities. Unless there is cooperation the authorities can absolutely do nothing except pray. How very easy to pinthe blame on the authorities. And what are you doing in favour of your own locality? Gossiping about 'this' and 'that' in the local caffe'? Better gossip on who the vandals may be and try to get him.

You get people who go a long way for a couple of extra quids these days. Maybe its in the way for some project to take place. Now that it has been damaged there is a valid excuse for it to be removed, maybe for restoration and relocation or just put aside to gather dust or just scrapped. I am sure that before this incident 'all' Slimizi, with hand on heart, knew about this phone boot and appreciated its place in our history.

Why are there so many morons with nothing better to do and not enough intelligence to realize that they are destroying what attracts tourists to Malta and that all vandalism costs everyone through taxes. When public property is destroyed, everyone pays!

Dont forget what happened a couple of months ago... http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20100421/local/play-area-at-independence-gardens-vandalised i reported the telephone booth at 9 am and the police checked all the cameras and questioned the neighbours but the findings are in the hands of the police. Yet again when everyone today reeling about the Marsaxlokk oil throwing incident, we find that are more sick minds who are willing to vandalise yet more of our heritage!

Yes minister, choose a team of experts to really examine what really happened, who caused it and how much it costs to repair. Was it windy? Were the hinges rusty, was the wood corroded etc., etc. Than at the end the overall costs will be a dozen times the cost of sending a part-time carpenter to repair a telephone box which with mobiles not even the 'illegal immigrants' use.
Peter Bonnici

Pretty pointless sending a carpenter to mend a cast iron structure.
Mark Demicoli

Cast iron????? hahaahaha
"had his timber door ripped off" Timberrrrr......the door can easily be repaired by a carpenter, and he can also change the only thing that is made in metal...ie. the hinges!

Shall we sell off all our Roman, Knights of St John and other foreign remains too, so we can forget our history? Perhaps we should demolish the temples too, as the temple-builders were not genetically our ancestors. Great idea...

anyone of these slimizi seen the vandals at work? So forget all about it. heritage or no heritage no one is going to pay for its restoration except some foolish gem collector. Seems that our country with all its omerta' doesn't deserve to have any heritage at all. All heritage crimes have gone unpunished. Much hullabaloo after discovering the damage and then......silence. After all it's only a relic for our courts.
