A French futsal player was yesterday conditionally discharged for a year after he admitted to stealing a handbag from the Havana nightclub in St Julians.

Aladdin Aouni pleaded guilty to stealing a handbag which contained a mobile phone worth €155 and €20 in cash belonging to Alexia-Ann Delia yesterday at 4.30 a.m.

The accused allegedly committed the crime under the effect of alcohol. Mr Aouni, 22, from Cannes, cooperated with the police and returned the stolen items.

He forms part of the team that played against Malta in a mini-tournament as part of the UEFA futsal EURO 2012. The French side won 6 – 1. He is expected to leave the island tomorrow.

Defence lawyer Joseph Ellis appeared for the accused.

Magistrate Edwina Grima presided over the case.
