General applications from girls wishing to join Church schools at Form 1 will not be accepted this year since all vacancies have already been filled, the Curia said this morning.

The vacancies were filled by girls coming from the primary schools of the same schools, applicants who have siblings in the same schools, special grave cases and the daughters of members of staff.

"Applications received on the basis of criterion 1 for Form 1 girls (have) resulted in a bigger number than the places available. Consequently applications for Form 1 girls, as Other Applicants, will not be accepted," the Curia said.

It added that a meeting is to be held for parents of girls who applied for Form 1 according to criterion 1c (children of employees in church schools). Girls would be accepted according to the regulations and a ballot would be drawn to determine those who are eligible.

The Curia also announced changes to the regulations which were published last month.

It explained that a recent decision to re-organise some of the Church’s Kindergarten schools meant that the number of vacancies for Kinder 1 had dropped by 32 for boys and 33 for girls. There were, however, 31 more vacancies for boys and 32 for girls in Kindergarten 2. Consequently, the regulations for entry into Kindergarten 1 and 2 have been updated to adapt them to the re-organization.

Also, on the advice of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, the names of those who apply under the Grave Humanitarian Criterion will not be published on the website www.maltadiocese.org as previously stipulated in the Regulations. Instead the application number and rank order will be published.

The Curia also clarified regulations on applications from pupils of Church schools without continuity (those without secondary school).

In their case, a ballot will take place if there are not enough places Pupils of a Church school without continuity will participate in the choice of school ballot.

Furthermore, some applicants according to the siblings’ and employees’ criteria may not be accepted initially in a school which has limited vacancies. However should vacancies become available, especially during the choice of school exercise these applicants would be given first preference according to the hierarchy established.
