Syrian charged with hiding foreigner
Mamdouh Altllas, 27, Syria, was this morning jailed for one year suspended for two after he was pleaded guilty to housing someone who did not hold a visa to stay in Malta.
Police turned up at Mr Altllas' house at 7 a.m. yesterday and he also obstructed them in their duties.

2) It seems a lot of the legitimate Poles went home having amassed a small fortune - see you Jerzy, give my love to Artur - or been dismissed as the Syrians come cheaper. And so it goes on.
Did Malta have its influx of Poles? Many Syrians doing up houses in Malta? Are they all accounted for (a bit more difficult to disappear in Malta than it is in London, for obvious reasons). Some mightn't not like this European deal. Shun the EU. Libya, Saudi Arabia and now Iran, beckon. Go for it! and forever keep your piece.

1) People from Eastern Europe have a right to be in Malta IF their country of origin is within the EU. According to some, that is as far as their right goes because nobody has to have work by right. What!? what?!
In UK - or in London, anyhow - Syrian house-refurbishers are two a penny and can be met and spoken to all over the place (like the Maltese, they are friendly. Maybe we share more than the language. And Mohammad is delightful if a bit thick). One group in particular works for a British Builder with, hopefully, qualified electricians and plumbers entrusted to do those job (Mohammad is priceless). The Syrians do the jobs that need muscle rather than training - plastering, painting, skiving. Yes, even Mohammad). It seems a lot of the legitimate Poles went home having amassed a small fortune, or been dismissed as the Syrians come cheaper. And so it goes on.

Probably in his country he would have got 50 lashes with the whip. Hiding a foreigner without visa and obstracting the police to do their duties. And he is Syrian. And then you get a maltese citizen caught smoking in a public place, which is wrong, and get 250 euros fine. What a joke :)

ETC, Tax and Vat Departnments should have a network in place to follolw up all such court proceedings and to immediately take action once they have all the requisit information from the law courts. Perhaps the courts should be asked to timely forward all findings to said departments.Undoubtedly all arraigned are doing some kind of work to maintain themselves.

@ s. grima. In this case it should be deportation, if he is not conveniently married to a Maltese, because he is not european.

(sigh) you are not deported because you are european or not, but only if deportation is one of the punishments contemplated by law for the crime you are found guilty of.

Why was this Syrian not expelled?
Sean Grima

because deportation is not one of the punishments contemplated for this crime.

There seems to be quite a few Syrians having a brush with the law lately.

So did the judge establish if this guy is working here legally, on holiday, or what exactly, since he is not an EU citizen and he is guilty of aiding others in avoiding deportation?

but they have not yet reached level of east europeans.

@ Sean Grima,
East Europe is part of a continent, Syria is only a country.
If we add the other 10,000 Africans plus all these North Africans I,m sure that the ratio would probably be 1 to 100.

isn't africa a whole continent?
