Sammer to stay at DFB

Former Germany captain Matthias Sammer has turned down an offer to join Bundesliga side Hamburg to remain as director of sport at the German Football Federation (DFB).

The 43-year-old had been courted by Hamburg who wanted to install Sammer as their director of sport, but the former East Germany midfielder and captain of the Euro ‘96-winning team will stay with the DFB.

“In the recent past, Matthias Sammer has done many positive things for the development of German football,” said DFB president Theo Zwanziger.

“We are very pleased that he will keep working for us to help future generations.”

Sammer has told Hamburg of his decision and has a contract with the DFB until 2013.

His role involves working with the national youth teams and developing a tactical system for all the German teams alongside national coach Joachim Loew.
