Davis Love was named captain of the 2012 United States Ryder Cup golf team yesterday by the PGA of America, launching the American quest to win back the trophy from Europe next year.

Love, who won his only major title at the 1997 PGA Championship, played on six US Ryder Cup teams, going 9-12 with five halves, and was a vice-captain on the American side that lost to Europe last October in Wales.

“The number one mission is to get the Cup back,” Love said.

The 38th Ryder Cup will be staged September 28-30 at Medinah Country Club in suburban Chicago.

The announcement came two days after the European Tour players committee voted Jose Maria Olazabal, a 44-year-old Spaniard and two-time Masters winner, as captain of the European squad that will make the trip to Chicago.
