The man who earlier this week was acquitted of the attempted murder of a man he stabbed in Balzan seven years ago was this morning jailed for four years. He is expected to appeal the sentence.

Marco Vella, known as il-Habsi, was on Wednesday found not guilty of the attempted murder but guilty, by an 8-1 margin, of having grievously injured Raymond Farrugia.

He was also found unanimously guilty of the illegal possession of a knife, disturbing the peace and relapsing.

Mr Farrugia was stabbed as he tried to break up a fight between Vella and Stephen Falzon in Balzan Square.

The trial was presided by Mr Justice Lawrence Quintano.
