European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek will pay an official visit to Malta next Monday and Tuesday.

EP President Buzek will hold meetings with President George Abela, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Speaker Michael Frendo.

He will address Parliament, hold an exchange of views with the Foreign and European Affairs Committee and a meeting with the Opposition leader Joseph Muscat.

The President will also visit the Balzan Open Immigration Centre and hold a series of meetings with civil society.

Speaking ahead of the visit, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek said:

"Malta and Maltese MEPs punch above their weight. Malta was amongst the last EU member states to enter recession and amongst the first to emerge, something the Maltese government and citizens can be proud of.

"We face common challenges - rising international food and oil prices, immigration, climate change, energy security. Malta's concerns are Europe's concerns."
