Saluting Battery temporarily dismantled

The Saluting Battery at the Upper Barrakka is being temporarily dismantled because of works on the site.

The antique Noon Gun was fired from the battery for the last time today. It is now being temporarily transferred to the upper tier of the Barrakka.

The other cannons are also being removed to make way for urgent infrastructural works. The area will be excavated for waterproofing to stop storm water from flooding the underlying historic Lascaris War Rooms located in Lascaris Ditch.

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna said the saluting guns will be returned to their place when all work is completed in April.

The works are being sponsored by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority through its Environmental Initiatives Fund. The work is being carried out by workers of the Resources Ministry.

@ James Green, If you kindly read the article again you will notice that the works are being carried out by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and thus Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna is not responsible if the works prolong for a monumental period of time. You should complain with the Government and not the NGO.

Ryan, MEPA is only involved through its sponsorship and not through any permits. And MEPA does not carry out any works! It only approves plans.

Maybe wait till April to complain too!

So to make it clear, until April there will be no noon gun fired?

@Ryan Scicluna
Not complaining about FWA. They are in fact doing a splendid job.
As to the works, well come April we'll be more informed as to whether this project will be finished on time or not.
It's all about reputations you know.
