Three people were injured when a gunman opened fire in a California school yesterday, reports said, as a local television station said the shooter had been found in a classroom.

Police reinforcements were rushed to Gardena High School, south of central Los Angeles, where the campus was locked down after the mid-morning shooting, the LA Times and local TV station KTLA reported.

KTLA said the suspect, thought to be a student, had been located inside a classroom and was being “cooperative,” as live television images showed armed officers rushing into the campus.

The shooter was described as dressed all in black, and was aged 16-18, KTLA reported, saying the gunman had been talking to teachers at the school, which has some 2,600 students. Amid fast-moving developments, KTLA said a short time later that police had been in contact with the gunman. At least two victims could be seen being loaded into ambulances and rushed away.

Local Gardena police officer Steve Prendergast told the CBS2 television station that a teacher called 911 to report the shooting. He said the severity of the injuries was unknown.

A LA Police Department spokesman said reinforcements were being sent, but could give no more details about injuries or the gunman.
