The American Embassy said today that as from March 1, applicants for a visa must have an appointment prior to calling at the embassy for their interview.

An on-line visa appointment service will be available for booking as of February 1.

The embassy explained that the on-line visa information service will continue to enable visa applicants to access accurate, up-to-the-minute information about US visa matters from anywhere in the world, at any hour.

As of March 1, 2011, all non-immigrant visa applicants in Malta will need an appointment to enter the embassy for the required personal interview portion of their visa application. Details on how to use the new service will be available on the U.S. Embassy website (http://malta.usembassy.gov) beginning February 1, 2011. Interview appointments for March, April, and May 2011 also will be available for booking as of that date.

The service is free of charge.

The Embassy recommended that visa applicants start the process two months in advance of their planned travel. Authorized travel agents may continue to submit visa applications to the Embassy, but must use the on-line system to book appointments for their clients. Those planning travel to the United States who do not meet the requirements of the Visa Waiver Program should begin the visa application process well in advance of their desired departure date.
