A unique orchestra – composed of blind women – will be performing in Malta next month.

The Malta Society for the Blind is bringing over the Al Nour Wal Amal (Light and Hope) Blind Girls Chamber Orchestra, from Cairo, Egypt, who will give a concert of classical music at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta, on February 5 in aid of the society.

During the concert, entitled ‘The love, hope and music concert’, the orchestra will play classics by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian and Bizet.

The colourful repertoire will also include Theodorakis, Delibes and a few pieces by composers from the Middle East and India. They will also be playing two pieces by Mro Joseph Vella as a tribute to Malta.

The concert is the brainchild of Julian Holland, a Maltese based in Cairo.

The Al Nour Wal Amal Chamber Orchestra has performed for a variety of audiences in schools, universities, embassies, theatres, concert halls, at conferences, the Cairo Opera House and for state visits to Egypt, including Queens, First Ladies and Heads of State.

The 38 piece chamber orchestra is under the direction of Ali Osman, and the musical supervision of Ines Abdeldaiem. The contingent includes 16 helpers and all the musical instruments for the concert.

This will not be the first time the orchestra has performed overseas. Their list of engagements have taken them to Austria, Jordan, Kuwait, the UK, Sweden, Spain, Qatar, Morocco, Japan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Canada and Greece.
