The Malta Union of Teachers said it registered an unprecedented number of new members over the last two years.
On January 1, the MUT said it had a total of 8,060 members, up from 7,817 in 2010. In 2009, 527 teachers joined the union and 413 new members were enrolled last year.
Union secretary Franklin Barbara said although over the past three years the number of members who retired or quit employment was significant one, the increase in new members suggested there would be further increases in the future.
The MUT thanked its members for their support and promised its commitment to all teachers.
