Zak Barton is the new European U-17 Open champion after beating Ross Muir, of Scotland, 5-1 in the final.

The young English cueist won a prize money of €300 and the losing finalist collected €100.

Barton was in a class of his own at the Apple Club in Buġibba. He lost the opening frame but then hit breaks of 100, 55, 49 and 48 on his way to a resounding victory.

Frame scores (Barton first 40-73, 71(55)-29, 66(48)-49, 100(100)-9, 70(49)-8 and 81-20.

In the semi-finals, Barton had eliminated Rhys Clark (Scotland) 4-2 (68-70, 100(68)-32, 80(53)-18, 21-80, 74-40 and 75-33) while Muir had the better of Liam Clark (England) 4-2 – 101(50)-4, 107(107)-10, 55-68, 27-77, 75-38 and 69(51)-0.

Rhys Clark beat Liam Clark 3-2 in the match for third place. Muir achieved the highest break of the tournament, a 107.

Sixteen players from seven different countries took part in the tournament which was organised by Pro Am Snooker and sponsored by the Malta Tourism Authority, Bank of Valletta, San Antonio Hotel & Spa and Apple Snooker Club.
