President George Abela said this morning he backed proposals for one’s wish to donate organs after death to be listed on the ID card.

He also promised to push forwards any proposals that would be made in this regard.

Speaking at a conference organised by the Malta Transplant Support Group, Dr Abela said relatives should not be able to go against an individual’s decision to donate organs.

“A donor’s wish should be respected even after his death,” he said.

69 per cent of respondents in a local study said they would donate their organs upon death. However, 77 per cent of them did not have a donor card.

In Malta, one person per year has a heart transplant, 12, including three from live donors, a kidney transplant, and 14 a cornea transplant.
