Tamas Priskin was the hero as Ipswich deservedly drew first blood in their League Cup semi-final with a win over Arsenal last night.
Arsene Wenger named Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere in his starting line-up but for all their midfield passing the Gunners lacked a cutting edge.
Lone forward Priskin tormented defenders Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou all match and was rewarded with the late winner in front of the watching Paul Jewell, Ipswich’s new manager.
Fabregas came close to breaking the deadlock late on when he steered the ball over with his thigh from Kieran Gibbs’s cross from the left.
It was a golden chance and the Gunners were made to pay when Priskin struck the winner in the 78th minute.
Colin Healy hooked a loose ball in midfield over the top and Priskin once more got the better of Djourou to run in on goal and side-footed a fine finish beyond Wojciech Szczesny.
