One-hour strike by kindergarten assistants
The Malta Union of Teachers has ordered a one-hour strike by kindergarten assistants in government schools on Monday, January 31.
It said they will report one hour late for work in protest at the government's failure to honour commitments to assimilate into the grade of Kindergarten Assistant 2, those assistants who had followed the required course - at their expense.
Kindergarten assistants who had been successful in their interviews for grade two had also not seen their conditions improved.
The situation, the MUT said, was supposed to have been addressed by the end of last year and the union had no alternative but to order industrial action.

Who else is to strike now? It is really pathetic to hear everyday complaints and threats of strike actions from the best paid workers with the best conditions while nothing is heard rom the private sector. Is this because Government is spoiling the public sector with our money? I think that there should be a limit to everything.

@c.camilleri I don't think you are referring to the salary of a kindergarten assistant when you said that we have the best conditions and a best of salary. The full income a kindergarten assistant gets with over 30 years experience in this post is around 900euro every 4 weeks which falls in the scale 13 in the salary scales. Her job at school starts at 8.00 in the morning and finishes school at 2.30 in the afternoon. She has 15 children aged 2years 10months-3years or 20 children aged 3-4years to take care of in a room all by herself. She doesn't have a coffee or lunch break and when she needs to use the toilet she has to call her superiors to send someone with the class because children should never be left alone for whatever reason. After school hours,at home, she has to prepare the daily plan, the activity sheet and do the daily evaluation. After the written matter she has to prepare the activities for the following days work.Round about 7.00 in the evening she can do whatever she needs to do.I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS.

I think your comment is a bit too much. I am sure many people know what taking care of a child aged 3 and 4 means, let alone having 15 of them. I am sure they do everything they can with them and parents are grateful for their support. I am one of those parents and i know that these people don't just open packets of crisps ( which by the way are prohibited in schools)

Ghax ma tmurx taghmel int dik is-siegha tiftah il-pakketti tal-crisps.
L-issue kollu inqala ghax il-gvern ma zzammx kelmtu mal-haddiema tieghu.

M. Cauchi! Hallina trid? Jifthu l-pakketti tal-crips biss! Mur int u oqghod ma' 15 - il tifel u tifla gurnata shiha u ara xi bzonnijiet ikollhom! Taghlim formali mhux suppost li jsir imma KG assistant li taghmel xogholha tajjeb taghmel hafna aktar milli qieghed tahseb int! Qabel tiftah halqek ahjar tkun taf fuq xiex qieghed titkellem! Dazmien il-KG assistants bhall-ghalliema kollha jkollhom inservice training regolari u haqqhom rispett ukoll avolja mhumiex ghalliema fil-veru sens tal-kelma - jigifieri b'kors tal-Universita ta' erba' snin. Ma tahsibx li kull min hu haddiem jixraqlu ftit rispett? Tkellem bir-rispett fuq il-haddiema trid? Jien m'iniex u qatt ma kont KG Assistant imma kont fl-edukazzjoni ghal zmien twil u naf x'jien nghid!

@ m cauchi Jien Kindergarten assistant u nassigurak li pakket crisps wiehed li hu wiehed qatt ma ftaht u qatt ma jien sa noffri lil dawn it-tfal.Jien u nahseb li shabi kollegi tieghi naghmlu u naghallmu hafna affarijiet lit-tfal li nahseb li inti ghandek bzonn titghallem ukoll.L-ewwel haga li nghallmuhom hi li biex jikbru f'sahhithom hemm bzonn li jieklu haxix, frott u li jixorbu l-ilma u nahseb li inti ghandek bzonn tibda tigi titghallem maghhom ghax mix-xehta lit-tfal tieghek flok tippreparalhom dak li jghodd ghal sahhithom, biex tehles titmahhom il-crisps.Jekk trid you are welcome li tigi fil klassi biex barra li tara xogholna kemm naghmluh b'dedikazzjoni u mhabba ghal tfal li m'humiex taghna,fl'istess hin titghallem xi haga ukoll!

Hope that this is not in vain. The government should do what it says in all areas. Teachers are still waiting for the conditions that weere signed for by the MUT and the government in 2007!!! And salaries is not the main issue here. The issue is better services for the students and curriculum time for the teachers!! Guess three years is more than enough time for the governmnet to act upon its promises. Though I'm sure that this is the case with many other issues on the island!!
