Kiosks have rent terminated because of City Gate project
Twenty-two out of 30 kiosks at the bus terminus have had their leases terminated because of the City Gate project but have been allowed to continue to occupy their kiosks up to June 30, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in Parliament.
They will be paying their rent pro-rata for these six months.
He said that there are eight other kiosks which are not rented from the Lands Department.

Do you realise the mess at Valletta city gate. Im not at all against the kiosks but its time to make this area look better, better organised. Te news said they will be relocated so why all the fuss. Don't you realise how ugly and dirty all this area looks and what about the smells. U ejja dak li hu tajjeb nghidu li hu tajjeb f'gieh kemm hemm.

Come on guys its not all the Kiosks that make the place untidy, my wife who his Maltees loves the fact that she can buy the deep fried dates and i can get a cool bottle of water for the bus ride back to lis-la, but what we do object to is the amount of what can only be described as undesirables who hang around the bus station and the amount of males holding hands and females with babys strapped to them make us fell very uncomforatable, and we are not talking about all the bus drivers ps i love you guys some times.

This is not a question about Mlp pr Pn . It's a question that 80,000,000 million euros were spent on this project which were entirely funded by our government . Kiosk have been there for ages they are almost part of our daily routine to go and grab a snack from them . From the other hand the project can't be stopped because of these kiosk . So why don't they have a space when the project is finished ?

I do hope that once the kiosks if re alloctaed they will set proper standards and perimeters.
It was a nonsense seeing such a state of disorganisation and free for all in that of public pavement and items placed on that same pavement.
I must say that uniform proper design should be issued for all kiosks and MEPA should approve the signage for the news ones erected.
At long last the Main Gate eyesores are being abolished.....WELL DONE

the 'tragedy' is only in the small minds of people that are lost in a sad obsession of false nostalgia and are terrified of change . . . There are others that are intelligent enough to have a vision for the future, look at change as an opportunity and a challenge and want to move forward instead of remaining bogged down in the past! If everybody still had the mental capacity of the former we would still be living in holes in the ground!!

@Dvella, yeah...yeah... luxury apartments next to historic Fort St Angelo, Fort Chambrai a housing estate ect ect what one may call progress, definetly earned millions to those involved.
What is your share? if not, may I remind you, it is but your tax money my friend. At the moment that could have gone to a much more urgent need. (Maltese society that is)

It's very sad that I hear that the Kiosks around the entrance to Valletta are to go.( Government Orders).
These Kiosks are part of the Maltese heritage.
They create a good atmosphere when one arrives at Valletta..As well as Newspapers, Pizza and Milk shakes..One can often see a stall selling Cheap Under pants.
Whenever I go to town I always finish off my tour by Finding one of these Kiosks selling Inexpensive coffee and sit down and sometimes shoot the breeze with some very interesting
men often bare chested and sporting Tattooed Necks.
Rather than get rid..I think we should encourage this atmosphere..We could turn it like the Square in Marrakesh ..complete with Snake Charmers, story Tellers. Food and music.
This is the True Mediterranean, North African Style..Not some Sterile Piano type Thingo.

Agreed 101%, best imqaret in Malta and some of the best pastizzi rikotta aswell, this is a totally over the top action that will only serve to make for a sterile environment as in many other European cities, Valletta is special; and different, and it's kiosks like these that help make it so special, please Malta do not change too much too fast as once the character of a place is gone it is lost forever, you may live to regret these pointless decisions.

It is nigh high time that these kiosks be given the order of the boot. They have been an eyesore for quite a number of years with hardly any space for pedestrians, especuially on the Sliema buses side. I drew the attention of the authorities year in and year out with hardly any action being taken. Merchandise, boxes, crates, trays, adverts, tent stands and what not do occupy the pavement. Besides the hygiene of the food selling outlets leaves much to be desired.
These are a downright disgrace at the entrance of the city and should have been removed long ago or at least from the very start of this new year. Hoping that no extension periods be authorised and that the area be cleaned up once and for all.

there is always a means and a way how to do things. there is the easy way or the hard way. the easy way out is to tell everyone to close down during works. the hard way is to plan properly and find a way how the works can carry on without disrupting other entities. i guess the government chose the easy way out!

Will these people be offered an alternative? It seems unfair to kick out people who are trying to earn a living like the rest of us and not offer them somewhere else.
I often buy a newspaper or cigarettes there on my way to or from my workplace and find it most convenient. Could they not instead make the kiosks slightly more attractive to fit in with the new scheme?

At Putirjal, one may find:
• The famous “tal-imqaret” (dates kiosk), home of the famous Maltese maqrut (deep-fried date cake). Delicious.
• From the kiosk in front of tal-imqaret, one can buy an icy-cold ruġġata (an artificial yet delicious refreshing orange squash)
• From “tal-ħalib” (the milk kiosk) one can drink a glass of milk at the counter.
• “Tal-cassettes”, a landmark for many.
I enjoy going to all of these places, and I am always so proud to introduce them to people visiting from abroad. I don't expect these places to last forever; nothing does, but it isn’t nice that they are killed so capriciously.
For the past few years, I constantly feel myself in a hurry to do things and to go to places before they drop them down, close them down, or whatever. Quite sad actually.
It’s a pity that who’s in charge has no respect for Maltese urban culture.
R.Gauci
Jan 13th 2011, 11:02
Are you referring to the smell of burnt oil which is used 1000 times before it is changed to fry Imqaret and other disgusting practices such as all the fumes from our eco- friendly buses going on the food, drinks etc. as Maltese Urban Culture?! While I agree that the people that had these kiosks rented legally and were earning their living from them should be given another place from where to practise their businesses, stricter health conditions should apply.
An alternative could be a roofed bus terminal even in another area which will protect passengers waiting for a bus from the weather elements and could integrate in it all these catering facilities and a proper information centre for bus commuters.

He said that there are eight other kiosks which are not rented from the Lands Department. Are thes kiosks licenced?. If in the affirmative to whom do they pay the relevant rents? I believe rents on Government land should be paid to the Government Property Division. Director of Land please note and take necessary action.

~Best news this year,at last we are getting rid of all those ugly, smelly and unhygeinic kiosks which were a disgrace to Valletta.~
Sliema seafront ruined, Tigne ruined, another Beruit, Manuel Island in line for obliteration, the Maltese countryside under tons of concrete, our old rikity buses destined to the scrap heap (could have been upgraded, not all)
Some may call this progress, could it simply be inferiority complex, wanting to be different, pretending to be modern, but perhaps just being drab, soul-less and without any real identity.
It may all be to the benefit to the Boys with the big Bucks, having nothing to do with real improvement. That has more to do with a mental change, an appreciation and improvement of Malta`s history and culture, ie anything that is typically Maltese
Steve Sant

Amazing, is it justified for the Government (that is supposed to be sympathetic with tenants) to simply kick out tenants and doing the dirty with them. Whilst on the other hand allowing an unfair rent law crucify the private sector, and letting it drown in taxes just to add insult to injury. Remove this unfair rent law, abolish it once and for all. One law for some, and another law for others .

S. Sant you are right. We are all equal but Government is more equal then the people. The Maltese rent law is anti human rights as has already been proven in international and local court. The problem is that people do not take Government to court and sue it for the damages or losses they are suffering due to these unjust laws such as the rent laws, agricultural lease laws and many others. Government will in the long run have to pay (with our taxes) for such shortfalls.

Benches and seating areas? Whenever I pass from the area I can't wait to get out of it while trying to hold my breath! Combustion engines, new or old, in those quantities will never make the place ideal for sitting around and enjoying the air quality! Place new trees but leave the benches out or the only people using them will be the Arriva (PTA) bus drivers for having an afternoon nap in the summer breeze bare breasted!
