Casa Lanfreducci is not actually the Malta headquarters of the Order of St John. Their HQ is located elsewhere.
The property is used as the representative office of the Malta section of the Order.
The spaces at lower ground floor level are vacant and until some time ago were leased to third parties for commercial use.
The utilisation of this space was crucial for the performance space project as it will provide the necessary back stage and storage facilities, avoiding excessive excavation in the Auberge d’Italie area.
The space will be linked to the new performance space via an underground new excavated corridor/spaces behind the stage area directly under Victory Street.
The excavated space, which extends under the existing Bank of Valletta and police station buildings, will be used as a back stage facility incorporating changing rooms/make-up preparation, toilet/shower facilities, instruments storage area, artists’ rest lounge, sound and lighting control areas, etc.
For the new performance space to function in the contemporary theatre world it is crucial off-stage facilities are provided. These will be developed in full compliance with our laws and in full respect to the historical context of the location.
