An urgent appeal for blood has been made by the Blood Transfusion Centre.

The centre said in a statement that because of the seasonal influenza, less people were giving blood and reserves were very low.

It said that unless the reserve increased by Tuesday morning, a number of patients would be unable to receive blood and some scheduled operations could be cancelled.

The centre appealed to people who felt healthy to immediately donate blood.

People who want to donate blood should go to the Blood Transfusion Centre in Guardamangia, which is open daily between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Donors should have their identity card or driving licence and should encourage others to join them, the centre said.
