A man who injured three police officers while trying to charge another three men was yesterday handed a suspended jail sentence.

Vincent Xuereb, 44, was jailed for two years suspended for four after he admitted assaulting three police officers and slightly injuring them on Friday morning.

The incident took place at around 10.30 a.m. in Sliema Road, Gżira, when three police officers were called to the scene after being informed of an argument between two men, one of whom was Mr Xuereb.

Another two men arrived on the scene and the situation escalated but the police officers managed to calm the men down.

However, Mr Xuereb charged at the men after a comment was made and ended up injuring the police officers who were in his way.

Mr Xuereb apologised to the court for his actions.

He also pleaded guilty to slightly injuring the three men, disobeying police orders and breaching the peace.
