Cat welfare organisation gets eviction order
Animal welfare officers and volunteers were outraged this week when Macina Development Company LTD ordered a non-governmental organisation to vacate its premises of five years by next week.
The organisation - CSAF, which looks after abandoned and ill cats, now has until January 16 to get out of the building.
It said in a statement that it consulted vets and the government’s animal welfare officers, who were alarmed by the plan.
CSAF coordinator Anna Abela said the organisation had not been given reasonable timeframe to move safely.
“We appeal to the consortium to honour our rights as an NGO and to recognise our role in maintaining public health and animal welfare in Senglea.
“We need so little to keep the cats safe, so to us it seems cruel and hasty to kick out these helpless pets without engaging with us in civil dialogue.”
The NGO is now appealing for urgent public support to find a small, safe area to re-house the cats.

Shame on the decision by Macina Dev. Co. Ltd. Although I fully understand the fact that they have legal title on the building, they might have been a little more conscientious about this issue and maybe give a little more time to the NGO to vacate the premises and maybe even help out in finding an alternative location.
However, capitalists surely will not heed to the cries of NGOs taking care of such poor little creatures. All that concerns them is money, money and more money. And cats will definitely provide them with none of this.
Animal lovers should become aware of who the people behind this company are. Also the same people have legal title of other historical buildings in the area - all used for business purposes. These were granted to these people by the PN government in the late 1990s.

The Macina DC should take over the finances of CSAF. That is they should 100% support the activities of CSAF or the least they can do is find alternative site for CSAF provided this new site is acceptable to CSAF. I as president of NCS know what a lot of good work this NGO is performing. Since they were set up we ( NCS) have had no problems from that area. I would like to repeat once more that if the LC of that area 'merge' efforts and found a modern shelter for these cats it will cost about 5c per annum per person in that district. Come on Local Councils of the South show Malta what you can do. Take up this challenge. By the way what does Macina DC has in mind about the site in question? Should not the residents of Senglea have a say in the matter? Finally the NCS supports all efforts by the CSAF.

Animals have no vote, and since animals have no vote, they are really treated as trash. Animal lovers spend so much time and money to help these animals selfleshly, and then suddenly people and companies without heart try to crush them down. I guess this is the happy new Year's wishes from the company. Well what happened to compassion? More time is needed to find a new place for these poor cats. The government should step in and hopefully other animal organizations will help out. It is a very sad situation, and something really good needs to be done to help out these animals. that is why Istrina should collect for these animal organizations during Christmas as these organizations are the ones who are really in need here!!! Every year this plea seems to fall on deaf ears.
I wonder if the European Union can help and step up to these injustices!
Please have compassion and find alternative ways for these cats - a new premise or at least more time to find a better solution.

the problem will only be solved when animals are given the right to vote. paul the octopus was capable of choosing the winning football team. at election we should place the photos of the candidates on the floor --- if the doggy does the number one on it then he / she gets the first vote; if the doggy does the number two, he/ she gets the second vote.

Why is it that when animals are involved, the hand of the law is strict and must be obeyed? There are so many who occupied government land, and instead of eviction, they got the land! Start from the fortifications of the three cities, and end in the hundreds of boat houses all over the country.
Give this NGO a chance until they find alternatives. After all they are not using the premises for their own interests but to help strays.

Humans have already turned the world upside down to satisfy their greed. What is wrong with helping other animals? Don't they have a right to live also?

If we’re ever going to clean this country from all the stray cats and dogs and the mass they leave behind (health hazard) the government must do like other counties do. (1) any one found guilty of abandoning a pet should be dealt with severely,(2) pick all stray animals,(3) if they are not claimed by a two three months period, sorry to say this but they must be put down,(4) we do have a law to clean up after our pets but like all other laws it’s not enforced.Than we solve the stray animal problem.

Yet more bad news for animal lovers!!!! Why is it that in Malta nation animal lovers are treated as trash? INone of us expect to be nominated for Gieh ir-Repubblika, but why are we not allowed to make a difference in peace for defenceless creatures? I am so discouraged when I hear people who claim to love animals speak out against NGOs who work their hearts off to save animals. Michael - don't forget that those cats have been thrown out by human beings in the first place. Having 4 cats - and I assume, taking good care of them, does not make you a cat lover. You are only doing your duty - in my experience love for cats/dogs or whatever does not stop at one's own door.
Don't we have enough restaurants already? Why are we always trying to make more money? Shame on whoever succumbed to greed and ambition. No wonder we Maltese have such a bad reputation when it comes to loving - or at least respecting animals.
As we say here - 'Il-huta minn rasha tinten'. As if that's not enough - the tail stinks pretty badly too! Pressure from above and criticism from below!

a disgusting ruling and some really disgusting comments below by people who are insensitive to animals' needs. for some people it seems that vacating an unused building is more important than caring for homeless and ill cats. this ngo is not breaking the law... it is doing the work our authorities should be doing themselves!

This is something that I never got to grips with in this country.... Instead of assisting all those incredibly devoted and genuine volunteers, that are lessening the problem that official entities including the government officials are not managing to do, even though we have had PLENTY of EU funds allocated for this issue, NGOs protecting animal welfare in Malta are treated as if they are homeless Gypsies seizing immovable property and other areas which are so much in need to shelter thousands of abandoned and stray animals!!! Will whoever is responsible step-up and be accountable for such ridiculous decisions? Will this serious issue of stray animals we are facing in this country ever be tackled?? It is so distressing for those who are trying to do something about it to be faced with giant concrete walls every time they try to take some action....

I shall pray every day that Macina Development Company LTD finds themselves in the same position that they have placed this NGO and these innocent creatures. All hail the God of €€€, as this is what most Maltese businesses pray to these days. Macina Development Company LTD is no exception and it shines brightly through their actions.

why can't they help cats if they want to? animals are helpless beings and need all the help required.. these most probably are cats who were thrown out in the streets by humans! so, i'd prefer helping a cat rather than a person as persons in need are as such in need because they don't help themselves and just feel sorry for themselves! a cat cannot do that!

everyone is free to put his r her efforts wherever and to whoever they wish. I personally admire these volunteers and gladly donate money to help them along. No one has a right to decide what is a 'better' cause. For me, one happy cat is equivalent to one happy human.

So that everyone gets a clear perspective of the issue, can Ms Anna Abela tell us what is the current legal title of her NGO over the building in question, please?
