The Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club (VLTC) have just organised their annual Christmas Junior Open.

This ranking event, held under the auspices of the Malta Tennis Federation, attracted the participation of a good number of promising players who competed in a series of events ranging from U-10 to U-16.

The U-10 girls singles was won by Helene Pellicano, with Francesca Curmi the runner-up, while the boys’ title in the same category went to Miguel Galea. He beat Omar Abdelghani in the final.

Benjamin Farrugia had the better of Zak Ciappara in the U-12 competition.

The Sammut duo left their mark on the U-14 and U-16 finals.

Katrina Sammut staved off the challenge of Alexia Cassar in the U-14 girls’ final, winning 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, while Raphael Sammut defeated Mark Schranz 6-0, 6-1 in the boys’ final.

Katrina Sammut made it a double with victory in the U-16 singles event. This time, she beat Maria Georgia Farrugia Sacco 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the decisive match.

Raphael Sammut emulated Katrina by winning the U-16 boys’ event, overcoming Schranz in a final that ended 6-0, 6-1.
