Validity of ID cards renewed again
The government has renewed the validity of all Identity Cards.
A legal notices published in the Government Gazette says that: Provided that with effect from 1st January 2011, any identity card issued after the 15th January 2002 which expires before the 31st December 2011 shall, notwithstanding the expiry date appearing on such identity card, remain valid up to 31st December 2011 and such identity card shall not b deemed to have expired before the 31st December of 2011."
The issuing of new ID cards with several electronic features is expected to start late this year, according to statements made last year.
Despite the renewal of the validity of ID cards by legal notice, the Passports Office replaces ID cards with new ones when they are needed for travel purposes.

It looks as if the government is dragging its feet to renew the ID cards. I suggest that all ID cards will be renewed by the end of this year to remedy the present embarassing situation. In this way only persons who qualify for a Maltese ID card will own one.

In spite of what John Abela says below, a LOT of us have been very badly hit by the expired ID cards and Air Malta's incompetence.
My passport was expired so I went for a flight to an EU country with my ID card as I have every right to. Would you believe they did not allow me on the flight because it was expired! I
After they made me miss the flight, I was speaking and found out that they did this to many, many people who they made them miss the flight for nothing as even though expired, the ID cards they were still valid form of identity check.

x'tippretendi li titla fuq ajruplan b'dokument skadut? U trid ir-ragun ukoll? Meta dokument jiskadi, anke b'gurnata wahda ma jiswa xejn. Darb' ohra ahsiblu minn qabel u geddet il-passaport. Hadt mna tellfek l'ajruplan hlief lilek innifsek.

You do not know what you are talking about! If you and all other passengers were allowed to board an aircraft with an expired ID card, first of all you would have problems at your destination as the expired ID card is only valid for Malta but not to other countries even in the EU and secondly, the airline will be charged a fee for each passenger that it carries with unvalid documents and will have to deport you back. So before splitting venom on Air Malta, first check your facts and you should have thanked the airline for saving you the embarrasement of being deported like an illegal immigrant!!

Trid tkun tgħix naqra f'dinja kultant hux. Ilhom jgħidu s-snin li biex issiefer trid iġġeddida imma jekk m'intix se ssiefer m'għandekx għalfejn. Daqsxejn sens komun. @ j Brincat,
It would appear that you consider that the validity period of five years for documents is acceptable .So you would accept a five year passport validity(wonder why they changed this as this used to be the case?)and a five year driving license etc.,Malta is exceptional and against the norm in many areas of validity periods for vital documents including the EHIC validity period which is the lowest in all EU member states

Improve your English. You are equating a country with its ientity cards. I suppose by you reasoning since Britain identy cards do not exist, it follows that Britain does not exist.

@ A Zahra. Seems like you have never lived in the UK. Either that or you are not accustomed to how such matters are handled in the UK. I also hear people saying that food, fuel and anything else costs more in the UK. I beg to differ. Not having an ID is no issue over an expired ID being validated by the Prime Minister or whoever ad nausea instead of being renewed.

Yes they know what they are doing. They are actually saving you some money until the new eIDCards are issued.
Now you anwser me one question.. Have you been effected in some way by the expired cards?
I don't think so.

Don't agree with you that a five year expiry period is short!

If nothing else this is very cost effective. I cannot actually see why the cards are valued for such a short period of time in the first place or why they need to be changed at all unless some vital detail on the card has changed or they are needed for travel in the EU in lieu of a passport.
