The government has joined the EU’s response in committing funds to finance projects related to combating climate change.
This follows a commitment made during the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December 2009 to provide developing countries with new and additional “fast-start” financing for 2010-2012. This will enable and support the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry, in collaboration with the Resources Ministry, is inviting expressions of interest from NGOs involved or interested in undertaking projects in the area of climate change. The proposals should be for projects to be implemented in African countries eligible for development assistance and particularly vulnerable to climate change.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry has identified Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda and Mali as priority countries, although others in the region are not excluded.
Preference will be given to projects that enable poor communities to build their resilience to climatic variability and to adapt to long-term climate change while pursuing sustainable development. These may include projects that strengthen the capacity of communities for water management, drought resistant agriculture and efficient use of energy for cooking.
Expressions of interest should reach the Directorate General for Economic and European Affairs by January 31. An adjudicating committee will evaluate the submissions and approve the projects.
