The Malta Resources Authority said today that gas sold in cylinders is cheaper in Malta than it is in the UK or Italy.

It said that competition in the market, due to the introduction of a new operator in the gas sector, has led the local companies not to adopt the maximum price it had established. The MRA said that although in other European countries gas was also distributed by pipe networks, prices of LPG in the UK and Italy when provided in cylinders are higher than in Malta.

In the UK customers who are not supplied by piped gas can choose to purchase either cylinders of butane or of propane:

Calor gas of the UK sells as follows: 7kg cylinder €25.18; 15kg cylinder UK - €38.66 and Malta - €19 - €19.60 There is an extra charge of €5.80 for delivery in the IK.

Flogas, sells the 13kg cylinders at €28.92, delivery included.

The prices in Italy vary from region to region, and between one city and another.
