Prices of another 38 medicines reduced
The prices of 38 medicines have gone down, bringing the number of medicines whose prices have been reduced to 129, the Secretariat for Consumer Affairs said.
The process to reduce prices to the EU average was launched last year by Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said.
The lower prices announced today range from three to 28 per cent.
The latest medicinesare used in the treatment of various illnesses or conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.
Other medicines are used by women during their menstrual cycle or by individuals suffering from depression.
The secretariat said agreement had already been reached with importers for cheaper rates on a number of other medicines. Their prices will go down automatically in the coming weeks as soon as the current consignments are used up. Their list would be published once the new price comes into effect.
The reduced prices for these medicines were established through a mechanism which has been in operation by the Consumers’ and Competition Division for the past four years. This mechanism established the European average cost which was then compared to the actual price in Malta. Importers were then requested to bring the price down to that level.
This mechanism used is currently being revamped in an exercise which is expected to lead to a 53 per cent increase in the number of products that could be examined and potentially become cheaper.

Well done Mr C.Said for a good job. But Sir, what I like to know is that before you started on this mission some one somewhere on this island was making millions of Euros by robbing the Maltese people left right and center.
HOW COME NO IS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS ROBBERY.

Are we by any chance paying the interests that the importers are having on their banks' overdrafts by increasing the prices due to the late payments by the government? Or is it time to swallow any past comments and dictate the reasonable prices for each medicine available in Malta? Yes you need balls to do that but it is simply urgently required. The price of a certain medicine that I buy is still the same , although there was a substantial reduction announced after September 2010. The excuse by importers and/or pharmacies re the old stock is simply taking a person for a ride. It does not happen in the case of any price increase of fuel and gas. So real , effective and immediate action please.

Your Pizza House is in dire need of customers at the moment, I'm sure. Everyone's queueing at the pizza outlet next door, it seems....!

I consider these PL supporters, writing here, as if they are a group of people who have been invited by the best Pizza House in Malta, which employs the best pizzaiolo, for a pizza.
In their endevour to find the flaw in the pastry (ix-xaghra fl’ghagina) they do not savour the pizza and end without knowing what they have eaten.
But, poor kids, that is what they have been told to do.

Yesterday's 8.00pm news bulletin on TVM informed us that the Maltese people are amongst the first in the world that take anti-biotics when they do not actually need them. I ask: since anti-biotics cannot be purchased without a qualified prescription, did the newscaster mean that local doctors are prescribing them without the need for them to be taken? I don't think this is the case as I have every trust in our reliable doctors. Like the man said: there are lies & there are statistics. TVM should check out where their their "stejjer" came from before pronouncing them on TV as the truth. Shame!

So looking at some of these price comparisons, Us poor citizens have been taken for a ride all along. What a racket and the government sanctioned all of this. Stop the racketeering and open up the pharmaceutical import market. Stop the Monopoly, I suggest the government start importing their own medicine and that is not rocket science. I can see why more and more people are getting their medicines from abroad or ordering their medicines online. It works for me, just make sure you order your medicines from a certified and reputable pharmacy. Mr Said, We cannot afford these exorbitant prices anymore.

Errrr...............after reading the list, its actually 23 medicines. The difference? In the dosage or contents. The brands are the same.
Price reductions are fine, but PLEASE stop assuming that we're all mathematically-challenged, gormless idiots.

More confirmation that the chemists / drug importers have been allowed to rip off the consumers for many, many years!
WHY ? ? ? Due explanations please Mr Government!

The big question is when these reducation would ACTUALLY be implemented, as some of the medicine reducations announced three months ago have not yet been implemented with the excuse that old stocks have not been exhausted.

Thanks for FINALLY reducing the price of Fosavance, after years of complaints!! It must be noted though that the fixed price in France is still cheaper: 34.08 € x 4 (compared to 38.18 € NOW in Malta), and in Belgium, it's cheaper still - and besides, 65% is reimbursed.
If you get a 3 month supply, it's much cheaper, i.e. 87.46 € x 12 (and that means 29.15 € x 4).

This reduction of medicine prices only means that people at large had been overcharged for a good period of time. Hence the cry :high prices of medicines was true and might be still true for other medicines.

A product that is made in UK will definitely be more expensive all over the world.....since no freight costs and third parties are involved. Is that too difficult to understand?
