This is to thank the police force for doing their duty! Thanks. However I would very much like to know how many breath tests were made and what was the outcome. Could the Authorities enlighten us on the matter please?

First of, that test is for drivers only. No need of beathalyser to now who's drunk, just visit Paceville during the weekend.
Perhaps you don't see this news:

Yeah, that's 400 drivers.

Were these the odd ones smoking a joint or swallowing a pill or two? If that's the case it was merely waste of time.....Drug wars should be targeted at warlords and not their victims....
Typical of Brazil: Death squads kill children running in the streets rather than targeting the elite who destroyed the nation in the first place....LET US NOT DO THE SAME

Drugs should be decriminilized like in Holland and California and several other countries ...why because the police want you to believe that they are needed to figh the "drug war" where really they never want to win it because then they would be all out of a job so before you think they are doing good think again ..drugs keeps police jobs secure !!!! ..what we need is another way to educate to reduce drug use and get rid of the Black market thrill of making big money ...

do you people stay up at night thinking about these things? i can't believe you're even half serious! i reckon police want us to drive fast, so they can have a job and a reason to be up at 2am chucking roadblocks instead of cosy at home with the wife!

I need to inform you that drugs in the state of California HAVE NOT been decriminalized. One can not be in possession of Heroin, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Hashish and a host of other hard drugs. Marijuana, on the other hand is different.
Jan. 1, 2011 has brought new laws into action.
ttp://www.canorml.org/camjlaws.html
One can have a medical reason for legally buying & possessing marijuana, up to a certain amount. You are grossly mistaken in whats free here in California. Pls use Google to educate yourself before making statements that would make the rest of the good citizenship of California look bad. Not every one supports these new laws.
It's a proven fact that the hundreds of millions of dollars that are spent yearly (for the last 20 -/+ yrs), by law enforcement to eradicate this drug has been a waste of time. They themselves admit to losing the war on this drug. But the battle wages on, much to the dismay of the good tax payers of this state.
So sir, pls be more informed next time you reply to an article here...thumbs up for the police there. Thank you.

Well done to the police in uniform who were seen patrolling the streets during new year's eve. Congratulations to the police district who will be receiving the police shield tomorrow at police headquarters for the best police district in Malta/Gozo during 2010.

Just one little Question to the Police - How many drivers were stopped at random spots last night checked for alcohol abuse while driving ? How many were caught driving over the supposed alcohol limit ? Alcohol is a Drug too and we have easy means to test it out !
Im quite sure that if proper random spot checks were done last night not 22 would be caught driving over the legal limit of alcohol but maybe 220 :~)

@D Xerri
It is not up to the police to legislate and close all the loopholes that obstruct random breathalyzer testing of drivers without having to prove reasonable grounds for suspecting "driving under the infuence".

Francis... Oh yes it most certainly is the duty of the police to make sure the streets and roads are safe, what better way to do it than cut down on the amount of people driving with alcohol in their blood.
It is a huge problem in Malta, the police does not take it seriously, which may be due to legislations, however, nevertheless they MUST start doing something about this, it is ridiculous to see how many people put others in danger because they think it is alright to drive home while drunk.

Fantastic work. This needs to be kept up at least and hopefully expanded. Together with the drink drive campaign maybe we're finally seeing Malta come into line with the rest of the EU. These campaignes now need to be made frequently in order to drive home the message that it's becoming much harder to hide or get away with these criminal activities.
Let's hope they get real jail time and not suspended sentences. A criminal record will be good punishment come employement time.

Good news, but unfortunately I don't think this operation will followed up by frequent regular unannounced drug seizures and arrests.
When the fuss dies down it will be back to 'business as usual' between the police and the club/bar owners.

The police have a tough job on their hands, but they always seem to cope with bringing some of the offenders to justice !
