Pope Benedict's visit will top the list for many, as well as the grim toll from fireworks factory explosions and dramatic criminal cases which culminated with the arraignment of a former police inspector charged with complicity in some of them.

This was also the year which saw Malta Shipyards privatised and a contract awarded to new operators of the bus service.

It was the year which saw Malta lose former President Guido de Marco, Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi and former minister George Bonello du Puis.
