Former Education MInister Philip Muscat died this morning, aged 80.

Born at Zebbug, Dr Muscat was elected MP in all elections between 1962 and 1987. In 1992, he made it to the House after a casual eelctions.

Dr Muscat served as Minister of Education under the Labour government and introduced the worker-student scheme for university and technical institute students.

The Zebbug council cancelled its New Year's Day activities as a sign of respect.

The Labour Party and the MUT also expressed condolences.
