The funeral of Sr Salvatorina Camilleri and the two other nuns, Jordanian Rania Haddad and Italian Valeria Briccoli, who died in a traffic accident in Israel on Christmas Eve, has been held in Jerusalem.

Mass was held at San Salvator Parish Church by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, together with the Nuncio, bishops and a large number of priests. The service was held in Italian and Arabic.

The church was packed, with the congregation including the members of the Maltese community and friends of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Mgr Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Custodian of the Holy Land, praised the work done by the three nuns, pointing out that in the 30 years she had been in the Holy Land, Sr Salvatorina had served in Bethlehem, Nazareth and the Mount of the Beatitudes. Many remembered her for her O ready smile and eagerness to be of service.

The ambassadors of Malta, Italy and Jordan delivered a short address. Maltese Ambassador Abraham Borg recited a prayer in Maltese.

The nuns were buried at the Franciscan cemetery on Mount Zion.
