A former chef who fell on hard times admitted to stealing about €400 worth of food items from the hotel restaurant he used to work in.
Joseph Demanuele, 38, of Mosta was conditionally discharged after he pleaded guilty to stealing the items between August and December from a hotel in Mellieħa.
Prosecuting Inspector Therese Sciberras explained that Mr Demanuele was going through a difficult time and was reduced to working part-time at the hotel.
“He had a number of loans to keep up with and he stole a number of items such as flour, sugar and coffee,” she told Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna. However, he returned most of the items and collaborated with the police.
Magistrate Apap Bologna conditionally discharged him for one year.
Lawyer Anġlu Farrugia appeared for Mr Demanuele.
