Floriana promises bigger and better party

Floriana will be welcoming the new year with a big party in St Anne’s Street, being held for the second time this year.
Mayor Nigel Holland said that this year's party will be bigger and better than last year's.
Activities will start at 6 p.m. and will continue until 2 a.m. on Saturday.
The road will be closed to traffic throughout the day and the public have been requested to use il-Vittmi tal-Gwerra Furjanizi, Sa Maison and Sarria streets.
The event will include a Christmas Parade by the Big Friends Guggen Musik, Maltese singers and dancers, Big Band Brothers orchestra, street animators, a fireworks display and confetti. The night will be compered by John Bundy.
Another NYE party is being held by the Valletta council in St George’s Square.
Asked why had the Floriana and Valletta council not united to organise one big common event, mayor Nigel Holland opted not to answer but Local Councils Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said the two activities being held by the different councils complemented each other and included a mixture of different activities.
Dr Said said that this party last year, together with the Fireworks’ Festival which the Floriana council had also organised, had benefitted from funding through the Local Councils’ Cultural Scheme.
Tourism parliamentary secretary Mario de Marco said the scheme encouraged councils to promote their heritage.
He pointed out that 50,000 to 60,000 tourists are in Malta in December, half of them in the last week. These people were already exposed to similar events overseas.
An appeal was made to party goers not to drink and drive.

I bet this has to do with the Valletta-Floriana football feud. Pathetic!

Maybe what Floriana needs to do for NYE is replace all those lights in St. Anne Street. I counted around 50 columns of lights with around 23 bulbs each column. If each buld is a mere 25W Bulb that is over 28KW of light on each side. What a lovely eco footprint. Have they looked into Valletta to see the Energy saving lights?

Bring 'em on! The more, the merrier! Last year we went to Floriana and although i appreciated the effort of promoting the first ever open air free NYE event, the entertainment wasn't impressive ( although i still enjoyed myself). This year, thanks to Valletta, only in a 15 minutes walk one could choose to listen to Fakawi and Winter Moods or else Big Band Brothers all for free. I'll choose again Floriana, thanks to Valletta!!! This is healthy competition! Keep up the good work guys, we're only 20 years late but at least these two local councils started the new era! Happy New Year :)

Thats what I just asked myself!
Why are they going to organise two NYE parties literally less then c1km away from each other, when instead they can just organise one together???

one question only WHY SHOULD FLORIANA DROP THE NYE CELEBRATIONS WHEN THEY WERE THE FIRST ONCE TO ORGANISE IT LAST YEAR? so much aggression and hate towards each other at this time of supposed to be peace and love,,, We started it and we will continue doing it,,,

Quoting: 'Asked why had the Floriana and Valletta council not united to organise one big common event, mayor Nigel Holland opted not to answer ...' PUERILE TRAITS, BOTH LOCAL COUNCILS! Quoting again: '... but Local Councils Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said the two activities being held by the different councils complemented each other and included a mixture of different activities.' INDEED: SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE POLITICIAN!

How come nobody thought of promoting these events as Alcohol Free events. If we avoid even one accident, it would be worth its while in Life, not gold.
In Toronto, this is what they do and thousands of people turn out in -10 degree weather. Hot chocolate is the number one drink of choice.
