Updated: L-Istrina raises €2.3 million

(Updated 6.30 a.m. on Monday)
The 11th edition of l-Istrina, Malta's annual charity event yesterday raised €2.3 million for charity.
For the second time in a row, it was devoid of prizes but still managed to raise €2,332,000 million.
The event, from the Lufthansa Technik hangar in Luqa, was aired on all television stations.
The public can still donate through a Facebook application, which is linked to L-Istrina’s Official Facebook Page. The actual page has claimed over 10,000 members since its creation last year.
Facebook members can give a donation by searching L-Istrina - F’Idejk, ‘Liking’ the page and following the links, or by directly accessing the application at apps.facebook.com/l-istrina.
The application will remain active for donations until January 6.
One can also donate by calling 5004 9005 (€12) or 5004 9010 (€24) or by sending an SMS on 5061 8918 (€6.99) or 5061 9222 (€11.65).
HSBC DONATION
The main sponsor of the event this year was the HSBC Malta Foundation which donated €100,000.
The donation was presented to President and Mrs George Abela by HSBC Malta’s head of service delivery Philip Farrugia and members of the staff who were also helping out during the event.
Over the last 10 years the Foundation has sponsored L-Istrina by donating in excess of €200,000 to the Malta Community Chest Fund.
Earlier this year, HSBC Malta Foundation organised a triathlon from Għarb to San Anton Palace to help with fundraising. The foundation has also contributed to the MCCF fund in aid of Maltese patients receiving treatment in London.
BOV DONATION
Another €100,000 were donated by Bank of Valletta.
The cheque was presented by chief officer operations Michael Galea, accompanied by staff members and children holding Piggy Banks used in the campaign.
€53,080 were collected in the campaign and the sum was topped up to €100,000 by the bank.
This is the seventh consecutive collaboration between Bank of Valletta and the Malta Community Chest Fund raising over €400,000 since the campaign's inception.
GO DONATION
Nearly €18,000 were donated by GO CEO David Kay, together with a number of employees, on behalf of the company.
GO prides itself in being one of L-Istrina's longest standing partners and supporters and has been actively involved in the event since its inception 11years ago.
GO sets a state-of-the-art communications infrastructure for this event, provides man-hours and various quad-play services at no cost.
It also waives call charges and other expenses connected with donations made by phone.
BANIF DONATION
A €151,000 donation was presented by Banif Bank later in the evening.

Prosit to all. I have a question regarding the league table of donors by town or village - expectedly most of the time this was topped by the largest towns including Birkirkara, Mosta Qormi and so on. But later in the day the village of L-Ghasri in Gozo made it to the top ten donor communities. How is that possible with a tiny community of 400? Was 'L-Ghasri' representing the whole of Gozo by any chance??
J. Bugeja
Dec 27th 2010, 10:24
Or a very generous benefector lives there. :)
Warren Galea
Dec 27th 2010, 10:25
The tables may have represented percentages from locations and not actual numbers of people who donated. This may mean that Ghasri had one of the largets donor percentage of all locations in Malta and Gozo.
C Dalli
Dec 27th 2010, 12:56
No - The impression I got (it may have been wrong) was that the percentage next to each locality in the table was a percentage of the total number of donors, for eg Valletta 3% means 3% of all people who have donated by that point in time are from Valletta. Otherwise it would not make sense - for eg a hamlet with 20 generous residents who all give donations will immediately make it to the top of the table at 100%.

I wonder why a Eur150,000 donation is not mentioned. everyone is equal but some are more equal than others.

Another bank operating in Malta donated over Euro 150,000 to this year's Istrina...
Seems it did not get same CSR publicity as organisations listed here....

Agree with you!! Or you're going to mention everbody who donated or organized something to raise money like Tonio of PaqPaq who also managed to raise more than 80,000euro or mention nobody. But still i'm so happy of us maltese that in this so called Global Crisis we are going through, we still managed to unite and raise 2.3million for good, sincere causes. Prosit kbira lil Maltin u lil Ghawdxin kollha!!

I cannot understand this donating thing....all year long you hear the same chanting that people are hard up, expenses have soared, bills are out of this world, people are barely making it through the week on their measley wages, grumbling about the government for constantly putting up prices on fuel, electricity, etc...making one think that we are really going through some bad times here.
Yet come Istrina and this problem seems to vanish into thin air!!!! Miraculous!!!
I just wonder when we are going to learn to go along with what we grumble about, otherwise why bother grumbling!

Maybe because money to l-Istrina has been donated voluntarily while the hikes in fuel prices, electricity bills, gas etc is being seen as an extortion

do not rush into conclusions. Eliminate the donations by the private entities (companies) first. Still, a fantastic gesture to donate without the perception of winning back something :)

Mr. Hili, I'm a pensioner and really squeezed for money.
Couldn't afford to buy presents for my three nephews, but I couldn't not donate some money for people who are really in distress.
I can do without my medicine for this week.

Alfredo Agius-..so you think that NORMAL people would laugh in Albert Camilleri face if he says that?
Go say this in the public that animals should have 1/4 of the money given to "l-istrina" and you will see who will want to dig a hole to put his head in!!
Alfredo Agius
Dec 27th 2010, 10:58
@Stefan Micallef - Where did I say about 1/4's exactly? My disgust was towards Mr Camilleri's hypocritical religious attitude. Would have made more sense if my message wasn't half censored off.

Look if they say that the money collected is going for the animals its ok,But lets say i have 20Ewro and there is a person that is sick and needs money and there are some groups of people who always say they need donations for animals i wouldnt hesitate to give all the money to the "sick" person.Hope you understoud me better, because humans needs first then animals.
