In the present climate, substantial pay increases for parliamentarians and mayors are unjustifiable – both morally and economically.

This hefty self increase is another election gimmik carrot for the politicians and mayors to work hard and be able to enjoy this double salary for a further 5 years (They hope). For sure we can enjoy the Euro 1.16.

BUT.................
These people, on their various election flyers always claim that they are offering their and 'services and dedicating their time' to serve their locality and its community without any personal interests involved and if and when they are elected, they will represent their constitutents equally and without fear or favour, and nothing to do with making personal gain!
......................... but this 'cause' has proven to be "helping themselves" and as usual their families and those who assisted them to get elected in the first instance!
If these increases were given or as in this case 'taken' in a Banana Republic, the so called civilised western world would be up in arms, but since it happened in a civilised country, with 93 of all opinion polls clearly against this massive and ludicrous increase, everyone keeps quiet!

Your first mistake is to believe what politicians say before an election. Even if they mean what they say, they cannot carry out all those promises, even if they tried. Politicians is what they are. Unjustifiable or not, they did vote themselves a hefty pay raise and it seems that they are going to collect that raise whether we approve of it or not. This is a done deal and it will be forgotten in a few weeks from now and there goes our politicians laughing all the way to the bank. The tax payer is left yet with another burden, another political mishap. Politicians, are a necessary evil. Can't live with, can't live without. From now on use your vote wisely.
