I agree with your editorial (December 12) that it is “a question of judgment” that the Labour Party allowed former police inspector David Gatt to be one of its delegates. It was also another judgment on the part of the Labour Party, to do what was expected of it and ditch Dr Gatt.
Everything, after all, is a question of judgment, though for some reason, The Sunday Times chose only this particular subject to editorialise on. It was as much a matter of judgment, and much weightier too, for then Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami to appoint Noel Arrigo as Chief Justice, who went on to accept a bribe.
It was also a question of judgment that Dr Fenech Adami opted for Lawrence Gonzi as his successor as party leader, against the tried and tested John Dalli. And look what we have – a Prime Minister who awards himself and his Cabinet huge salary increases and who is so prone to make U-turns.
It was also another question of judgment for Dr Fenech Adami to now criticise Dr Gonzi for being lax in his control of his MPs. Just as it was another instance of judgment that Dr Gonzi has now agreed to call witnesses to the BWSC hearings of the Public Accounts Committee, though he had steadfastly refused to do so over the past several weeks. The Sunday Times has not editorialised on any of these (not on the latter of course, that came too late for an editorial in The Sunday Times last week).
And finally, it was also a matter of judgment that you did not print one single letter from readers about the scandalous, backdated increases awarded in secret by the Cabinet to itself and to MPs (that, too, is another question of judgment). I can’t believe that no reader of the paper wrote on this in time for publication.
Let’s see now if you will exercise your judgment to publish this letter.
Editor’s note: The writer of this letter is incorrect on many counts, but we extend our good wishes for Christmas.
