Danilo Doncic has set his sights on an immediate return to coaching after terminating his contract with Greek Super League club AO Kavala by mutual consent earlier this week.

AO Kavala engaged Doncic’s services in the summer as an assistant to Serbian coach Dragomir Okuka but the latter was dismissed last month.

Henryk Kasperczak took over from Okuka but he only lasted one month as a 1-0 defeat to Atromitos in the Greek Cup prompted Makis Pomiadis, Kavala’s trigger-happy president, to relieve the experienced Polish coach of his duties.

Doncic, who was in charge of Floriana for one year in season 2007/08, was asked to stay at the club after Okuka’s departure but Kazperczak’s exit has spelt the end of the 41-year-old Serbian’s time at AO Kavala.

“These things happen in football,” Doncic told The Times from Greece. “The club decided to part with Kasperzcak and the entire backroom staff after the team lost a Greek Cup match to Atromitos.

“I’m going to Belgrade now to spend Christmas with my family but my intention is to get a new coaching job as quickly as possible.”

Before his stint with Kavala, Doncic, regarded as one of the most prolific strikers to grace Maltese football during his spells with Valletta and Sliema, was part of the technical staff of Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Sofia.

Asked if he was eyeing a coaching job in Malta, Doncic replied: “It’s no secret that Malta is very close to my heart.

“I’ve learnt a lot from working alongside experienced coaches like Okuka and Kasperczak in the last two years. I’m now better prepared to take over a team as head coach.

“Will I return to Malta? If an interesting proposal comes along, I will certainly consider it.”

Farrugia set for U-21 comeback

Meanwhile, the Malta FA are poised to overhaul the technical centre as part of a renewed drive to boost the level of the national teams at all levels and the standard of coaching.

Sources have told The Times that the MFA will draft in a host of a new coaches and other experts to form part of its technical set-up.

It is believed that Ray ‘Zazu’ Farrugia is being lined up for a return as Malta U-21 coach. Farrugia enjoyed a successful four-year spell at the helm of the Malta U-21 team between 1998 and 2002.
