Broadcaster and former Department of Information assistant director Victor Mercieca passed away yesterday at the age of 83.

Formerly a teacher, Mr Mercieca joined the DOI and, along with Mary Spiteri and Lawrence Mizzi, was involved in the educational broadcasts the department used to run. He was also active in writing scripts and participated in foreign film productions which came to Malta. Mr Mercieca passed away at Villa Messina in Rabat, surrounded by his seven children, one of whom, Bernadette, made the lengthy trip from Australia.

His son Anthony said his father had remarked: “When your sister arrives, I’ll probably die”. He passed away three days after her arrival from Frankfurt, where the plane was stuck in snow.
