People are being urged to take the plunge for charity and maybe burn off a few extra calories from their Christmas lunch by jumping into the sea on Sunday in an annual fundraiser event.
The Thomas Smith annually charity swim, which is now in its 12th edition, was started off by 11 years ago by Anton Buttigieg, a manager at Thomas Smith Group.
Around €6,000 was collected last year and 75 swimmers of all ages took advantage of the extra warm weather to jump off the quay below Balluta’s church into the sea.
Mr Buttigieg encouraged everyone to take part – even just to turn up at the quay on Sunday at 10 a.m. and support those who were going to swim.
“The turnout should be good and – as always – we are hoping to collect more than we did last year,” he said.
The event is being organised in collaboration with the Sliema local council, the civil protection and St John’s Ambulance and all the proceeds will be donated to the Community Chest Fund.
Another charity event this Christmas is the Jingle Bell run being organised by Inspire on Sunday.
This is a fun-filled run complete with Christmas hats and bells.
Runners are to meet in front of the Fortizza, Sliema with jingle bells on at 9 a.m.
Whilst trying to wake up Sliema Sea front residents with a Christmassy sound of bells participants will proceed to Spinola bay and back, finishing at the Preluna Hotel & Spa where all participants will be invited for a friendly chat and a cup of hot chocolate and mince pie.
To participate, one must give a minimum donation of €5. More information from Renato Vella, tel: 2189 0000.
