Malta this year forked out some €380,000 in financial assistance for projects in developing countries, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said yesterday.

It said the amount included a €50,000 contribution to the United Nations’ flash fund for Haiti, which had been devastated by a catastrophic earthquake.

The remaining €330,000 were distributed among charitable organisations carrying out projects in poor countries. Funds were used to purchase training and teaching equipment in India, the development of a study centre and housing estate in Ethiopia, accommodation in Tanzania, a project to collect water in Uganda and the construction of a clinic in Chak, Pakistan.

The projects were chosen following a call for applications at the beginning of the year.
