With reference to Austin Bencini’s article (December 18), at no point did Evarist Bartolo launch an attack on President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami’s family. He just referred to the fact it has members whose re-marriage was possible due to the availability of annulments.

All Mr Bartolo said, and will continue to say, is that he expected more compassion and less self righteousness from Dr Fenech Adami towards those whose marriage has irrevocably broken down, have a relationship with a new partner and would like to remarry. These people cannot remarry unless they get a divorce from an overseas court or manage to get an annulment. People like Dr Fenech Adami, who know of people who manage to get an annulment quite easily, should be more compassionate and less self righteous towards those who do not have such easy access to annulment and subsequent marriage.

Editorial note:
The comments by Dr Bencini, which Dr Schembri refers to, were based on media reports (not on The Times) which were not denied or corrected.
