Musicians and performers are being called to “show up and play” in Merchants Street, Valletta as part of a street arts initiative which has had to do away with its competitive element to encourage people to take part.
“We have been speaking to many performers and realised the competition aspect was making them hesitant about applying as it implied a certain level of performance and preparation,” Chris Dingli, coordinator of the initiative, said.
Although the original plan was to have a Star Of The Streets competition, complete with downloadable application forms and terms and conditions, it has now been toned down into an “informal, festive showcase” for all performers.
“There are no application forms to fill in. Performers can simply show up and perform for as long as they like,” added Mr Dingli, who described his own busking experience in London as “incredibly rewarding”.
“You don’t need to have much preparation for it at all, simply do whatever you enjoy doing, even if it’s just jamming. If there’s already someone on the pitch, join in.”
Their stage, or pitch, is on the corner of Merchants’ and St Lucia streets, which will remain available until Christmas.
Performers are invited to donate 10 per cent of their earnings to L-Istrina fund-raising marathon
This is an initiative of the Malta Council for Culture and Arts and the Valletta local council.
