The government’s decision to appeal the Karin Grech judgement was this morning described as “insensitive” by Labour leader Joseph Muscat.

Speaking in Zebbug, Dr Muscat said the government’s decision was offensive all people of goodwill, it was offensive to Karin’s family and her memory.

The government has filed an appeal contesting a Court’s conclusion that there was political discrimination in its decision to award Ms Grech’s family €200,000 as compensation.

However, it is not contesting the Court’s decision that €419,287 should be awarded to the family.

Karin Grech was killed by a letter bomb more than three decades ago.

In its judgment given on November 30, a court ruled that the “cowardly” crime was a consequence of her father’s work with the government during a politically turbulent time.

Dr Muscat said that the government’s decision to appeal the point as to whether the murder had a medical political motive or not, slammed the efforts for political unity made over the years.

Dr Muscat said that he saw no difference between the Karin Grech and Raymond Caruana murders. Both were martyrs and wounds should not be re opened.

A minute silence in their memory was then observed.
