Christmas came early at Bristol Zoo Gardens as Santa distributed gifts for the four-legged and furry residents.

While an Xbox or iPad might be at the top of some Christmas lists, some recipients appeared more than happy with stockings of fruit and fish.

In keeping with the festive season, the zoo's latest arrivals ˗ reindeer Jingle and Bell ˗ were among those getting presents.

The two sisters were given their favourite food lichen to help keep out the cold.

Bristol Zoo's head of marketing Heather Holve said: "Reindeer are a traditional part of Christmas so it's great to have them here for the festive period.

"They bring a real sense of magic to the zoo."

Other recipients included the centre's macaque monkeys, who went bananas for their presents.

And there was something fishy about the treats the south African penguins had in their stockings.

Ms Holve added: "The stockings are more than just festive decoration, they're also a form of enrichment, helping to keep the animals interested because they have to hunt and forage for their food, making dinner time a little bit more exciting."

Visitors to the zoo are able to get up close to the reindeer who will be there throughout the Christmas period.
