The Knights claimed the 2010 Wheelchair Rugby League Championship despite a sterling Kavallieri effort in the final round played recently at St Martin’s College.

In need of only a second placing in the third round to secure the title, the Knights went down two tries to one against Kavallieri in the final but still achieved their objective.

John Gauci led his Inspire team by example and Joss Howland was always present in the Overseas line-up but it was Pierre Mangion and Graham Attard who spearheaded Kavallieri to their maiden round victory.

Earlier, a trio of tries from Knights players Mauro Miceli, Anthony Micallef and Dario Schembri put Overseas out of contention.

The competition organisers, Inspire and the Malta Rugby League, are fielding expressions of interest to expand next year’s competition to four rounds and an increased number of teams.

This was an encouraging pilot season, bringing together wheelchair and non-wheelchair bound athletes, as per the sport’s rules, from across the country to compete in a new sport that was introduced in France less than a decade ago.

Standings: Knights 18.33, Kavallieri 15, Kavallieri (men) 15, Inspire 11.67, Overseas 5, Kavallieri (women) 5.
