The Maltese Parliament is expected to discuss a European Council proposal for the establishment of a future permanent mechanism to safeguard the financial stability of the euro area as a whole at the beginning of next year, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this afternoon.

Speaking at the end of the European Council in Brussels, which agreed on the setting up of this mechanism, Dr Gonzi said that while this mechanism would be available to Eurozone countries, countries not in the zone would be able to participate in it.

This mechanism would help establish stability in the Eurozone, address particular difficulties and help countries facing a crisis overcome their troubles.

Dr Gonzi said the council also discussed the economic situation and the effects of the international crisis on several countries.

NSO statistics showed that economic growth had continued in Malta, the country’s employment rate was very positive and its unemployment was low compared to the other EU countries.
