Only a few das ago some NGOs cried foul.
Luckily these NGOs will not be benefiting.
Since they claim that they represent the majority of the Maltese people I suggest that in the future they run their own show and go ahead with a telethon....if they really have all Malta behind them lets see how much they collect.
Glad that l istrina will not be throwing away money on these NGOs........

To all those whining about "Charity begins at home" - may I remind them that it may begin at home, but it certainly should continue in other countries.
And I prefer saving one human life than 1,000 stray dogs and cats.

Ms Marmara,
I have no issue with animal welfare charities but it is becoming evermore evident that some persons simply can't set priorities right. Many a time I have noticed venomous and spiteful comments by people who hide behind a guise of animal love.
Comments such as yours speak volumes about people like you, and I am in no doubt that you really meant what you commented. Luckily those of similiar mentality (although boasting imaginary majorities) are no more than, "quattro gatti" (kindly excuse the pun)!
On a different note, some entitiies are increasingly exposed for their fund hoarding orientations and priorities.
Nonetheless, Happy Christmas to you too.

It is a shame - and irresponsible - that JRS will be receiving money froml-Istrina this year. WHY?
JRS - the local Jesuits - continue influencing political decisions in our country. They did that repeatedly in the past - and keep on doing it,\ - despite public opinion which is overwhelmingly against illegal immigration to Malta. They keep on being insensitive, arrogant in the face of Maltese public opinion.
They know what harm illegal immigration has caused to other countries...yet they persist in their biased machinations.
They just preach - but avoid offering their premises in Malta and Gozo to accomodate the illegal arrivals. They are selfish to expect the Maltese to shoulder the financial, social and religious repercusions that are already resulting because of illegal immigration to our islands.
As for the Jesuits' ''retreat houses'' (Mount St. Joseph and Manresa House) it is a fact that people (even tourists) are accomodated there even if they are not participating in religious retreats. There the accomodation fees are cheaper that hotel rates....undercutting the latter in my opinion. Such things must be stopped. MTA please note.
And now JRS will be getting l-Istrina money!

I am rather sorry Mr. President. I will not be donating anything to this Year's Strina. Why? Simple. Why do we have to donate to foreign Beneficiaries? No, let their own Govt. take care of them. And the JRS? Of course not. What about Dar Tal Providenza? Like others before me said, charity ALWAYS, begins at home.

Thanks for letting us know where the money will go. This year Dar tal-Providenza will be getting our family's financial help - certainly won't give any money that may find its way to JRS and foreign based entities.

Ironically a few days ago the following NGOs were whinning & crying foul:
BirdLife
Friends of the Earth
Malta Organic Agriculture Movement
Nature Trust
Ramblers Association
Żminijietna
http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20101215/local/ngos-criticise-exemption-for-church-organisations
Now none of these NGOs will be benediciaries.......this will be a challange for them......starting the year without funds.....lol.....they can always run their own show and have a telethon all for themselves.....after all they claim that all Malta supports their incentives....
Have a happy Christmas, a happier new year and an even happier and joyful bank account topped up with abig fat ZERO

Philippines, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Jesuit Refugee Services, Franciscan Sisters of the Heart of Jesus (UK???).
Do these entities all publish their accounts or are they kept secret?
Forget me. Thanks but no thanks. I'll donate to Dar tal-Providenza. It's closer to home. As the saying goes... Charity begins at HOME.

' Do these entities all publish their accounts or are they kept secret????????' I agee with you 100%
All entities including Malta Community Chest fund should publish their accounts so that the people donating will know exactly where their money is going to. I used to donate to L-istrina because I was under the impression that the money went to help Maltese people needing medical assistance in Malta and abroad. This year I will pass on my donation to 'Puttinu' cares.

I too will donate directly to Dar tal Providenza! How come Dar Pirotta benefitted last year and this year is once again a beneficiary? And this when the government has a stake in it and allots a substantial amount of funds yearly, and when the residents' families have to pay to keep their familiy members there, in some cases to the tune of 400€ a month each!!

While charity is always charity I do have some reservations why some included charities are for foreign based organisations.. I do understand that these are in need as well, but I myself would prefer to ensure that what i donate goes to people in need locally... While the foreign people also need help, I am sure that many maltese people are still in need of help and for me these should be on top of the list.. Same argument goes for JRS.... not that these people do not deserve our help but in my humble opinion there are others who need more ... then again I guess a good deed remains a good nonetheless...

Why the Peace Laboratory is never included in the beneficiary list. It is a movment that is helped by charity.

Its a good thing that some NGOs are not benefiting. People like myself like donating to poor PEOPLE not dogs , birds etc. Those who would like to donate for a good cause know how to give their donations. There is Dar tal Providenza, Sisters of Mother Theresa in Bormla, the Ursoline Institutes who take care of our orpans and those orphans forced upon us, Suret il Bniedem and other homes for homeless run by the Franciskans. There is Caritas which cares not only for drug rehabilitation but also donates to the needy. This just to mention a few. Some of these will benefit from the Community Chest Fund. Lets make sure our donations go to the right places. Dear fellow Maltese, YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR DONATIONS HAVE TO GO THIS CHRISTMAS. We have 59,000 people in need, and the amount is increasing fast.

And some of us like to give to BOTH people AND dogs, birds etc. And yes, we do know how to donate to good causes. Also, we do not go around shouting it out to all and sundry.

@Marcel Dingli
Environment IS a priority. Education IS a priority. Giving EXAMPLE IS even much more of a priority. If 90% of the fund went for PEOPLE and 10% went to other environmental initiatives then Istrina would have been EDUCATING people about the importance of our environment and at the same time giving an EXAMPLE.

What a wise idea it was to include the millennium chapel in this year's istrina. The millennium chapel is an oasis to all those needing support in time of crises. For your information the millennium chapel has its own director and staff and has no connection with the church adjacent to it.The refurbishing done to the church was done by money collected in the church and benefactors who are always there to help. I would suggest your goodself to go to the millennium chapel, contact fr.saviour grima the director, who is always available,to see for yourself the good work that is done there.
