There was a spate of good results for Maltese swimmers on the first day of the World short course championships, in Dubai, yesterday.

Edward Caruana Dingli did the men’s 200m freestyle in 1:54.32 to improve his previous best by 6.33 seconds, while Neil Agius swam the distance in 1:57.26.

In the 100 backstroke, Mark Sammut improved his time by 0.33 seconds when finishing in 58.86, a new national record.

Andrea Agius was the next swimmer to better the national limit when clocking 1:03.38 in the 100 breaststroke with Daniel Galea doing 1:06.93 in the same event to clip 2.15 secs off his personal best.

Nikki Muscat did likewise in the women’s race when improving the national mark by 1.05 secs after covering the distance in 1:05.54

Melinda Sue Micallef was just one-hundredth of a second outside her PB in the 50 breaststroke which she did in 34.57, while in the 4x100 freestyle relay the boys’ team, made up of Andrea Agius, Andrew Chetcuti, Mark Sammut and Neil Agius, registered 3:31.51 when placing 13th overall.

Overall the performances of the Maltese swimmers could be described as generally good, even though they failed to proceed further than the preliminary heats yesterday.
