Twenty new taxi licences were today allotted by Transport Malta to the highest bidders.

72 applicants satisfied the eligibility criteria and out of those eligible, 58 submitted an offer.

The highest bid placed was of €105,000. The 20th bid was of €40,000. This had to be drawn by lot as five bidders had submitted the same amount. The minimum bid was set at €20,000.

The allocation of the 20 taxi licences was part of the taxi sector reform which will see the introduction of 50 new licenses by 2012.

The bids were opened during a public session held in the offices of Transport Malta in front of TM officials, government notaries, the public and the media.

The winning bidders will be expected to apply for the actual registration of the taxi for which the new Taxi License will be issued within six months from being notified in writing that their bid has been accepted.

A new taxi licence shall only be issued to the accepted bidders on condition that the vehicles they present for registration conform to all the conditions set out in the Taxi Services Regulations for the registration of new taxis.
